Reading an article about the potter Lucie Rie in Crafts magazine recently I was prompted to search out this book by Tony Birks and look again at her work. All the images come from the book.
I love the subtlety and simplicity of her pots. I love their shape and the use of sgraffito …..
the bands of colour …..
the way the oxides and glazes drip into each other …..
enjoy …..!
ps. I’ve just updated my website with details of forthcoming exhibitions
Hi Debbie
I did pottery before textiles, and I love the work of Lucie Rie and Hans Koper.

The book I refered to talks about the Lucie Rie ‘quiver’ – the special ‘rightness’ that marks her work out….. I suppose that, as artists, is what we are all aiming for and so makes her work relevant regardless of the medium we are working in.
She was an expert at finding the special ‘rightness’. I think you are well on the way to it, if not already there, while I have a long way to go!
