I am reading Being Alive by the anthropologist Tim Ingold. In this eloquent book he explains what it is to exist in this world. Covering subjects that are central to not only anthropology, but also art practice, ecology and philosophy, it covers topics as diverse as line-drawing, the process of skill and story-telling. In the chapter Landscape or weather-world? he suggests that our environment is constantly making and re-making itself and that we shouldn’t see the phenomena of the world – wind, water, stone – as objects or surfaces but as materials that are continually evolving.
